Rick Owens’ SS23 “EDFU” Collection Brings Color, Exaggeration and Reflection
Rick Owens managed to transform a mere scrap of fabric into Paris Fashion Week’s hottest item.
Yes, I’m talking about that itsy-bitsy tank top, modeled by Tyrone Dylan Susman, the impossibly muscly muse of fashion’s resident prince of darkness. At Owens’ Spring/Summer 2023 show at the Palais de Tokyo, the designer debuted a new take on the ribbed tank, a humble basic that Prada and Loewe catapulted to high fashion fame last season.
Owens slashed the summer essential to barely-there proportions, transforming it into a harness-like garment that exposes the entire chest and abdomen. Somehow, Owens engineered the skimpy top with a loop of fabric that dangles from the right armpit and drapes around the waist, like some sort of tiny sarong.
I’m sensing the beginnings of a trend here. in Milan, Versace also showed skin-baring tank tops — specifically, a lime green version with an open back and cut-outs at the waist.
Back to Owens — other highlights included a vest made of shiny, fish scale-like panels; purple-y, iridescent turtlenecks; wide-legged cargo pants in an array of colors (most notably yellow snakeskin); and mesh caftans that looked like hooded mosquito nets (reportedly inspired by his trip to Egypt). Naturally, new versions of Owens’ sky-high platform boots also made an appearance.
Still, I’m betting big on his teeny-tiny tank top. Paired with Owens’ pentagram panties? Chef’s kiss.
