Adidas Is Looking After the Skaters With Its New ADI2000
Y2K was a vastly different time in skateboarding style, especially when it came to footwear design. From IPath to DC Shoes, Etnies and Osiris, ‘the bigger and bulkier, the better’ seemed to be the maxim, and now, two decades later adidas are reviving the spirit of some of those turn-of-the-century classics with a new skate-inspired shoe dubbed the ADI2000.
Appearing in lime green and freshwater blue colourways, the ADI2000 is quite unlike the slim sneakers adidas Skateboarding has created for Tyshawn Jones, Dennis Busenitz and Mark Gonzales. Instead, it features an extra-poofy heel and tongue plus a wide toebox, all crafted with a classic mixture of mesh, suede and nubuck. There’s even early aughts-style adidas Originals branding on the tongue, heel and midsole! Down below, an ultra-thick midsole finalizes each look.
The jury’s still out on exactly how skate-able the ADI2000 is – after all, those 2000’s skate shoes weren’t really known for board feel or responsiveness – but potential performance aside it’s an apt call-out to a different era of skateboarding, one that appears to be more geared towards the lifestyle sphere. A release date has yet to be announced, but it’ll likely hit shelves this spring or summer.
