Converse Taps Come Tees for Chuck 70 and Apparel Collaboration
Strongly rooted in the Los Angeles streetwear scene, Come Tees is the brainchild of Californian artist Sonya Sombreuil. Now, through a collaboration with Converse, the label is spreading its wings while remaining true to its distinct aesthetic.
All made and designed in LA, Come Tees has been churning out colorful, graphic garments featuring Sambreuil’s artwork since 2009. Abstract, graffiti-esque illustrations created by the artist, who has previously exhibited her work in New York, Copenhagen, and Tokyo, are mostly added to hoodies and t-shirts — the typical canvas that streetwear labels present their graphics on.
Coming together with the classic American brand Converse, that working method is continued as hand-drawn graphics have been digitalized and printed onto a range of garments. However, the collaboration also takes the label into new territory, adding a sneaker into the mix.
Titled “Realms and Realities” the collection aims at creating a, “Glimpse into a personal, introspective dreamscape and shares Come Tee’s dreamlike work through an immersive textile, meant to invoke a teenager’s bedroom,” according to a statement from Converse.
For the clothing, those dreamscapes can be split into two categories. One is filled with cartoonish plants and green scribbles, featured on a matching white set comprised of a hoodie, t-shirt, and pair of chinos. Meanwhile, the other is more of a collage of figures, phrases, and the word “realms” from the collection title which is scribbled out in large block letters, presented on a t-shirt and shorts.
Bringing together the two graphics that split the genderless clothing collection is a pair of Converse Chuck 70 sneakers. Elements from both are combined onto Converse’s signature sneaker, which also incorporates hand-drawn tiger stripes on the side where “realities” is written and a more polished tiger stripe design on the side where “realms” is airbrushed.
With the Chuck 70, Triangle hoodie, Triangle floral t-shirt, Triangle Realms & Realities t-shirt, Triangle front chino and Triangle long short forming part of the collection, you can find them for sale at www.converse.co.za.
