Sportscene Recreates Their Playground In Collaboration With Nike

South Africa’s leading street wear retailer, Sportscene, have revamped their iconic basketball court in their Sandton City flagship store. The court was opened on 21 April 2022 with a celebrity basketball shoot-out game match between two celebrity all-star teams.

The teams were captained by two of the country’s leading DJ’s, namely Courtnaé Paul and DJ Doowap, who selected 3 additional members each to take on the challenge. Each member of each team was given one minute to shoot the ball from a designated spot in front of the hoop. Each player received an extra 30 second bonus round to score extra points for their team. #TeamDJDoowap which was made up of dancer Tarryn TNT, rap artist 45 Degrees and Cape Town Tigers point guard, Lehlogonolo Tholo.  At the end of the exciting competition, #TeamCourtnaéPaul, which included professional basketball player Somuso “Moose” Mthembu, African hip hop star, Rouge and fashion creator Zaid Osman, walked away as the winners.

Nike has always been entrenched both in pop culture and the sport of basketball. Their role in recreating the Sportscene basketball court was only a natural collaboration seeing as the Sandton City store has become a key cultural hub for likeminded people to meet in Johannesburg. The South African public has also had a growing interest in basketball and both Nike and Sportscene have tapped right into that with this partnership.

Sportscene continues to push the boundaries by redefining what the consumer shopping experience should feel like. With plenty of time still left in the year, consumers will be waiting anxiously for the brands’ next move.
