Ana de Armas Reimagines Marilyn Monroe in Teaser Trailer for Netflix’s NC-17 Drama ‘Blonde’
Netflix has released the first official teaser for Blonde starring Ana de Armas, who plays Marilyn Monroe.
In the clip, the Cuban actor channels the beloved icon in some of her most famous looks, such as the white dress worn in The Seven Year Itch and the pink strapless gown from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, which includes a performance of “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend.”
The forthcoming Netflix biopic is a take on Joyce Carol Oates’ novel of the same name. The official synopsis reads as follows: “Blonde boldly reimagines the life of one of Hollywood’s most enduring icons, Marilyn Monroe. From her volatile childhood as Norma Jeane, through her rise to stardom and romantic entanglements, Blonde blurs the lines of fact and fiction to explore the widening split between her public and private selves. Written and directed by Andrew Dominik, the film boasts a cast led by Ana de Armas and featuring Bobby Cannavale, Adrien Brody, Julianne Nicholson, Xavier Samuel and Evan Williams.”
Since Monroe’s tragic death in 1962, a number of actors have portrayed her on TV and cinema. Most famously, Michelle Williams played the late blonde bombshell in My Week with Marilyn, which was released in 2011. The film granted Williams a Golden Globe award and an Oscar nomination.
For Blonde, de Armas worked hard to perfect Monroe’s signature breathy voice. “It only took me nine months of dialect coaching, and practicing, and some ADR sessions,” she told The Sunday Times. “It was a big torture, so exhausting. My brain was fried.”
Blonde premieres on Netflix on September 23. Watch the teaser above.
