Facebook Exploring New Prompt Against Extremist Content

Facebook is now testing new features aimed at helping users who have been related to extremist content.

According to reports, the social media giant will now provide prompts for users which have shared extremist content or are believed to be on the path to extremism, providing them with educational, anti-extremist resources and support. These features are part of Facebook’s response to the Christchurch Call for Action campaign as well as its own Redirect Initiative, which “helps combat violent extremism and dangerous organizations” in countries all around the world.

In a statement to The Verge, a spokesperson from the company said that the feature is part of the company’s “larger work to assess ways to provide resources and support to people on Facebook who may have engaged with or were exposed to extremist content, or may know someone who is at risk.”

The new anti-extremism prompt comes as part of an ongoing effort from the social media giant to moderate its feeds and create healthier and more factual content. Back at the beginning of May, Facebook implemented a new prompt encouraging users to first read an article before simply sharing it online, and soon followed up with a new feature that highlights users who frequently share false information.
